old-age: I, Claudius

Alexander Korda and Josef von Sternberg set out to turn Robert Graves’s novel I, Claudius into an epic but the production was jinxed and the movie was never completed. It took another forty years before I, Claudius reached the screen: as a highly acclaimed BBC mini-series.

A few scenes survived from the unfinished movie and were shown in the 1965 documentary The Epic That Never Was. Fortunately, these included a couple of scenes of Flora Robson playing the aged empress Livia (Flora was then aged around thirty-five and the before image shows her in her early thirties.).

If anyone knows the makeup credits for this movie please email me.

Flora Robson played a wide variety of character parts in a fifty year career in the movies: some of her many looks are displayed in the chameleons section.
