These are two unused Dick Smith makeups from the mid-1970s.
The Sentinel: strange things start happening when Alison Parker (Cristina Raines) moves into a new appartment. Dick Smith designed this makeup for the scene at the end of the movie where Alison is the new Sentinel guarding the gate to Hell: in the final cut only the back of the nun’s head is seen.
Burnt Offerings: strange things start happening when the Rolf family move into a new home in the country (sounds familiar). Dick Smith came in, as a favour to director Dan Curtis, and redesigned and applied Karen Black’s old-age makeup as an aged Marian Rolf for the final scene. He produced three versions with varying degrees of makeup: all three were filming in one day. Dick’s favour was the one shown on the left but Dan Curtis went with the lighter makeup shown on the right ‘because he was afraid you couldn’t tell it was Karen with the others’.
