The quality of ageing makeups in soaps and comedies varies from the absolutely naff to the excellent. Sometimes the nature of the programme almost demands a deliberately bad or caricatured makeup but there also seems to be an implicit convention that makeups that would be unacceptable in any other context are okay in soaps and comedies.
