Few would consider – or, after the Gurkha campaign, dare – calling Joanna Lumley grotesque but she has played a series of of mostly-funny grotesque characters.

In the mid-1980s the glamorous parts started drying up for Joanna Lumley: she was no longer a Purdey or even a Sapphire. But she hung on in there until Jennifer Saunders created Patsy Stone. Since then she’s reinvented herself.
