What is this thing about female characters with their mouths sewn, glued, riveted or stapled shut?

‘The Quiet Woman’ is a not uncommon name for public houses in England. The pub sign often features a woman carrying her own severed head – the implication clearly being that women are only quiet when they’re dead!
