From Shakespeare to Shakespeare In Love, playwrights and film-makers have delighted in disguising their female characters as men. Sometimes they have aimed for a realistic look and sometimes they’ve played it for laughs.
These images are mostly taken from recent movies and TV programmes: there are separate thumbnail pages for female-to-male disguises from pre-1976 movies and movies of 1976 to 1989 and movies of the 1990s.
Then, of course, there are the actresses who have played male characters.
