Star Trek makeups: Lieutenant Saavik

Back in the days before all female Vulcans shared the same wig, Lieutenant Saavik was a Vulcan crew-member who appeared in three Star Trek movies: The Wrath of Kahn; The Search for Spock; The Voyage Home. Kristie Alley played her in the first movie but, fortunately, was replaced by Robin Curtis for the other two movies.

Apparently there were plans to bring Saavik back for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country: in early drafts of the script Saavik was to be the traitorous crew-member who conspired to disrupt the peace initiative. But after some discussion and casting problems Nicholas Meyer decided to create a new Vulcan character, Valeris, portrayed by Kim Cattrall who supposedly had been Meyer’s first choice to play Saavik in The Wrath of Khan.

Robin Curtis commented on the makeup:

It took three hours to get ready every morning, and about one hour was devoted to the ears, and another hour to the eyebrows.

On The Wrath of Kahn Werner Keppler & James Lee McCoy were credited as makeup artists; on The Search for Spock The Burman Studio was credited for special makeup appliances and Wes Dawn, James [Jim] Kail & James Lee McCoy as makeup artists; on The Voyage Home Brian Wade was Klingon & Vulcan prosthetics designer, James Lee McCoy was key makeup artist, and Jeff Dawn & Wes Dawn were makeup artists
