Valerie (Natasha Wightman) was an actress detained by the secret police in a totalitarian post-World War III Britain. She was tortured and died in detention but left a prison diary for Evey (Natalie Portman) to find and read when she was detained in the same cell; or then again it may all have been a lie.
Whatever, Natalie Portman may have got the publicity for having her head shaved on-screen but Natasha Wightman was also shorn on-screen and delivered the better performance. Natasha Wightman had played another shorn character in Mouth to Mouth.
