horror makeup: the Buffyverse – various demons

The Buffyverse – various demons

For a time Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the best shows on TV, and it had really good makeup and lots of female characters. I thought it wouldn’t be the same after Buffy died (again) – that maybe it had jumped the shark – but for a while it all seemed to come back together, albeit darker. And Angel was great.

As one of its legacies, Buffy changed the way we expected screen vampires to look. But although vampires were the main enemy in Buffy there were also a significant number of demons – and cases of demonic possession – around, and in Angel demons became the main enemy.

Of course, not all demons, or other supernatural beings, were evil.

The vampire designs evolved from concepts designs created by the Burman Studios. Until 2002 Harlow FX created the makeup effects with Todd McIntosh as makeup supervisor. Robert Hall (Almost Human) was then (seasons 6 & 7) in charge of the makeup effects with Dayne Johnson as makeup supervisor.

The makeup

Pylean Deathwok Demon (Angel): Barney Burman did the makeup for this resident of the Host’s world (Don’t you just think the Host deserved his own series?) on Amber Minney. (Angel season 2)

Demon prostitutes (Angel): In the episode ‘War Zone’ Angel paid a visit to a demon brothel giving an excuse to create some sexy demon prostitutes including Lina, a human-like demoness with quills instead of hair and a prehensile tail. These demons also worked there. Todd McIntosh was responsible for Lina’s look. (Angel season 1)
