I think this was meant to be a comedy. In 1693, the Sanderson sisters – Winifred (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy) and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) – were executed for their unforgivable witchcraft: sucking the life out of children to retain their own youth. Three hundred years later and the careless lighting of a black-flamed candle on Halloween brings them back to life. A spell temporarily restores their youth but they need children before dawn.
Kevin Haney was responsible for Bette Midler’s old-age makeup; Lee Harman was Bette Midler’s makeup artist; John M Elliott Jr was the key makeup artist; Cheri Minns was the makeup artist; Tony Gardner provided animatronic effects on the movie; Rick Lazzarini (the Character Shop) provided minature puppets of the witches for the flying sequences.
