bad girl look-alikes: Myra Hindley

Myra Hindley (1942—2002) was a notorious English murderer known as the ‘Moors Murderess’. Between 1963 and 1965 she and her lover, Ian Brady, killed five youngster aged between ten and seventeen: at least one of the killings was tape-recorded. The pair were convicted of three murders in 1966; Hindley was sent to Holloway prison, and quickly won many friends, claiming she had reformed. It was to be another twenty years before they confessed to two other murders: despite extensive searches one body has never been recovered. Despite a long campaign for her release led by lord Longford, she died in prison in 2002 – the UK’s longest-detained female prisoner. After nineteen years in prison Ian Brady was transfered to a secure mental hospital where he remains. The murders had such a shocking impact that it was the fortieth anniversary of her trial before Myra Hindley was portrayed on screen.
