









In 1875 a young ‘Mudlark’ – a street child subsisting by scavenging on the banks of the River Thames – finds a medallion with an image of Queen Victoria. When an older friend explains that ‘she is the mother of all England’ the Mudlark promptly sets out to meet her. He sneeks into Windsor Palace as prime minister Disraeli is struggling to persuade the Queen to end her long seclusion – for thirteen years since the death of prince Albert. You can guess the rest.
