This sub-section covers the the period of European history from 1000 to 1200 CE. In Britain this period is conventionally taken to begin with the Norman invasion of 1066.
Medieval Europe wasn’t big on the use of makeup but there were some features, eg the shaved hairlines, that were fashionable in part of the period (for some classes) that help to date-stamp an actresse’s appearance as a medieval character.
As well as Richard Corson’s two general books on period fashions in makeup and hair, Plucked, Shaved and Braided: Medieval and Renaissance Beauty and Grooming Practices 1000–1600 (Daniela Turudich & Laurie J Welch) was described as a hilarious romp through the medieval and Renaissance fashion world – but I’ve yet to see a copy and I’m not sure if it was actually published.
