Period makeups: 13th and 14th centuries

This sub-section covers the the period of European history from 1200 to 1400 CE. In Europe generally this was the age of the Hundred Years’ War; the Reconquista; the fall of Outremer; the Papal schisms; the Black Death; Saint Thomas Aquinas, Marco Polo, Genghis Khan, Dante and Chaucer; and the beginning of the Italian Renaissance. In Britain this encompassed: king John and the Magna Carta; the conquest of Wales; the recognition of Scottish independence; and the Peasants’ Revolt.

As well as Richard Corson’s two general books on period fashions in makeup and hair, Plucked, Shaved and Braided: Medieval and Renaissance Beauty and Grooming Practices 1000–1600 (Daniela Turudich & Laurie J Welch) is described as a ‘hilarious romp through the medieval and Renaissance fashion world’.
