Lettice Knollys, countess of Leicester, (1540—1634) was a young lady-in-waiting to queen Elizabeth I who was banished from court for having the temerity to marry the duke of Leicester, the queen’s favourite. Decades later her son, the duke of Essex, was also the queen’s favourite: although she remained out of favour she survived his unsuccessful rebellion against the queen. Lettice outlived the queen by some thirty years to die at ninety-five in 1634.
The Virgin Queen: in this mini-series Lettice (Sienna Guillory) encouraged her son’s rebellion. Neill Gorton was responsible for the prosthetic makeup for the aged Lettice. Karen Hartley-Thomas was makeup designer; Laura [Loz] Schiavo was makeup artist; Maureen McGill & Anna Morena were hair stylist/makeup artists.
