Seventeenth-century France

Unlike the sixteenth century no one face haunts us from the seventeenth century. But of French characters one name does stand out – milady de Winter.

Besides milady, there was, of course, Anne of Austria: the queen who, according to Dumas, was somewhat careless of her jewelry. And then there were the mistresses of Louis IV – notably the marquise de Maintenon and the marquise de Montespan.

As with other period makeup sub-sections, the characters shown here are an indiscriminate mixture of real persons and fictional characters.
