C17th France: The Three Musketeers

Come on you know the story: D’Artagnan and his musketeer comrades thwart the plans of Richelieu and his minions – Rochefort and lady de Winter (Lana Turner) – to usurp the King’s power. If so there’s not a whole bunch of surprises here other than whatever happened to Rochefort – maybe it was time for his holiday – why Richelieu do to get defrocked. Anyway Gene Kelly bucles his swash.

Apparently none of the main actresses was keen on her role: Lana Turner originally took a studio suspension in preference to playing Milady who she saw as a mere secondary character; Angela Lansbury, then in her early twenties, thought she was too young to play the queen though Anne would only have been in her mid-twenties in the novel; June Allyson tried to get out of the role of Constance as she did not feel comfortable doing a period piece.

Jack Dawn was the makeup designer.
