The Rise of Catherine the Great

In 1745 a young German princess arrives to marry Grand Duke Peter of Russia. Initially all is well but his suspicious, unstable nature gradually estranges them; Peter finds solace with pretty courtiers while Catherine invents her own (fictitious) lovers, temporarily improving matters.

In 1762 Peter’s accession to the throne brings out the worst in him and Catherine is urged to assume power.

The rest, as they say, is history.
