Madame Bovary is a novel by Gustave Flaubert that became notorious when it was attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors when it was first published in 1856: as is usually the case, it then quickly became a bestseller. It is now seen as one of the first modern realistic novels. Emma Bovary is the doctor’s wife who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. The plot may seem simple, but the novel’s true art lies in its details and hidden patterns: Flaubert was a perfectionistic who was always be searching for le mot juste.
