George Elliott: A Scandalous Life: Mary Anne Evans (Harriet Walter) was born in in 1819 but is far better known as the novellist George Elliott. She used her intellect not only for fiction but also to question the values of her society and its religion. The scandal of the title refers primarily though to her relationship with George Henry Lewes: he was married when they met in 1853 and they remained together until his death in 1878.
