Max Alvarez of Cinecism said: ‘The culture for which Hollywood has shown its greatest contempt has been the [Arab or] Middle East culture.’ Even allowing for blackface and yellowface he may have got a point.
The Middle East has certainly been a rich source for movies and for exotic loccations and characters: the tales of Sinbad the sailor, One Thousand and One Nights, the Bible, Egypt, the crusades, the Foreign Legion, and latterly Arab terrorists.
Besides actresses playing Arab or Middle Eastern characters, this section also includes a few less clearly definable characters including: Marlene Dietrich’s gypsy from Golden Earrings and Angelina Jolie’s Mariane Pearl (Dutch father and a Cuban mother of Afro-Chinese-Cuban descent) from A Mighty Heart.
