Actress Anna (Meryl Streep) plays outcast Sarah, the French lieutenant’s woman of the title. Mike (Jeremy Irons) plays Charles, a biologist who's engaged to be married, who falls in love with Sarah: Sarah leaves Charles after a short but passionate affair. During the shooting of the film Anna and Mike go through a relationship that runs parallel to that of their characters. History does not record the nature of the relationship (whether friendly, professional, intimate or of mutual detestation) between Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.
