Racechanging: Arab & other Middle Eastern characters

Max Alvarez of Cinecism said: ‘The culture for which Hollywood has shown its greatest contempt has been the [Arab or] Middle East culture.’ Even today white actresses play Middle-Eastern characters with darkened skins that would be almost unthinkable for black, Asian or Native American characters.

The Middle East has certainly been a rich source for movies and for exotic loccations and characters: the tales of Sinbad the Sailor, One Thousand and One Nights, the Bible, Egypt, the crusades, the Foreign Legion, and latterly Arab terrorists.

Besides actresses playing Arab and other Middle Eastern characters, this section also includes a few less clearly definable characters, including Romani & Dom characters (eg Marlene Dietrich’s gypsy from Golden Earrings).
